Osaka, famous for its food and its friendly, talkative locals, is the second big city on many trips to Japan, and it has a rock bar scene all its own. Its nightlife centers on two hubs: Minami, around Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori, and Kita, around Umeda. Most of the bars below are in or near one of them, from the backstreets of Higashi-Shinsaibashi and America-mura in the south to Doyama and Kita-shinchi in the north, with a few a short train ride away.
The biggest group here is hard rock and heavy metal, mostly rooted in the '70s and '80s, and a good number of these bars keep guitars, amps and drums on hand so guests can play or join a jam. Classic rock fans are well covered too, with bars for '70s British and American rock, progressive rock, late-'60s rock, blues and soul, and an Elvis-themed bar in Dotonbori. You'll also find bars devoted to Japanese rock and visual kei, and the Hard Rock Cafe at Universal CityWalk.
Each bar below has its own short description and tags, so you can pick by style. Because the bars in Minami and in Kita sit fairly close together, it's easy to plan an evening around one area. We add bars to this list as we confirm them.

Before you go
Most of these bars are small, often just a counter and a handful of seats, and many are run by one or two people. Many small bars in Japan charge a cover or seating fee, sometimes served with a small snack, while others charge none, so don't be surprised to see one on your bill. Cash is still common at small bars, so carry some yen even if you plan to pay by card. Smoking is allowed inside some bars, which is worth knowing if you're sensitive to it.
Opening days and hours at small bars change often, with irregular holidays and private events, so check the bar's official website or social media before you go. The legal drinking age in Japan is 20, and you may be asked for ID. If you arrive as a group, it's polite to ask before filling up a tiny bar. Song requests are welcome at many rock bars, but ask the staff first and follow the house style.
