Rock Bars Along Tokyo's Chuo Line: Koenji to Kokubunji

The JR Chuo Line runs straight west from Shinjuku, and the neighborhoods along it are home to a big part of Tokyo's music scene. Koenji, Asagaya, Kichijoji, Kokubunji and Tachikawa are all on the same line, so you can hop between bars without changing trains. Koenji is only a few minutes from Shinjuku, and Kokubunji is around half an hour.

Our pick on this line is Rockbar Painkiller near Kokubunji Station: a hard rock and heavy metal bar with rare music videos on a 100-inch screen and regular live music and jam sessions. Koenji, long known for its punk scene and live houses, has the most bars, from a Japanese punk and hardcore bar to an '80s heavy metal bar serving vegan food and a metal-themed dining bar. Asagaya and Kichijoji lean toward classic rock and vinyl, and Tachikawa has a bar showing concert footage on a giant monitor.

Each bar below has its own short description and tags, so you can choose by mood. We add bars to this list as we confirm them.
