In Japan, the line between a bar and a stage is often thin. Alongside live houses, the small concert venues where local bands play, there are many rock bars that keep a drum kit, amps and guitars in the corner. Some have a house band that plays every night, some hold open mic or session nights where customers take turns, and some simply let a guest pick up a guitar when the timing is right. For a traveling musician, they are one of the best ways to meet local players without speaking much Japanese, since everyone knows the same songs.
These bars exist all over the country. In Tokyo, Bauhaus in Roppongi has been playing hard rock and metal live since 1981, Rock Bar HEAVEN in Akasaka invites guests to jam with the staff, Rock Bar GABIGABI in Shibuya holds nightly live shows and open mic sessions, and Shimokitazawa has a live bar devoted to the Beatles. Osaka has several hard rock and heavy metal bars in Umeda, Shinsaibashi and near Tenjimbashisuji with instruments ready for guests. Nagoya's Sakae and Nishiki have bars with stages, gear and vintage guitars, Yokohama has British rock and rock and soul bars with live nights, and Fukuoka has a Beatles-inspired venue and bars with house bands and open mics. Sapporo's Susukino and Kyoto's Gion have them too.
Know what kind of night you're walking into. On a show or event night there is usually a set program, and some bars add a music charge, while on a session night players sign up or are invited in by the staff. Even where instruments are out on display, ask before you touch anything, as many belong to the staff or regulars. Bringing your own picks or drumsticks is a nice touch, and having a few well-known classics you can play makes it much easier to join in.

Rockbar Painkiller
Kokubunji, Tokyo
Near Kokubunji Station, Rockbar Painkiller is a hard rock and heavy metal bar named, of course, after the Judas Priest classic. The owner left a long company career in 2016 to open a long-dreamed-of rock bar, has been to Wacken Open Air, the world's biggest metal festival, six years in a row, and still fronts a band with high-pitched screams and a Flying V. The owner's taste leans melodic: Michael Schenker, UFO, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall and Avantasia are favorites. Rare music videos play on a 100-inch screen, and the bar hosts live shows and jam sessions. Drinks include beer, bourbon, whisky and shochu, with light bar snacks rather than full meals. Smoking is allowed inside on regular nights; on event nights, smokers step outside. Some English is understood, but a translation app on your phone is often the quickest way to chat.

Schedules are everything at live bars. Shows, sessions and open mics happen on particular days, and many bars post them on their official social media, so check before you go rather than hoping to catch something. Weekends are often the busiest, and at a small venue it can be worth contacting the bar ahead if you're coming with a group.
Cover and music charges vary, and cash is still the norm at many small bars. Some bars allow smoking, which can matter in a small room with a band. You must be 20 or older to drink in Japan. And if you do get up to play, keep your volume and set length in line with the room, applaud the other players, and thank the staff afterwards; that's how you get invited back.
