Japan took British and American rock to heart early. The Beatles played the Nippon Budokan in 1966, and through the 1970s Tokyo became a regular stop for the biggest British and American bands. Out of that era grew a culture of small rock bars that treat the music of the 1960s, 70s and 80s with real care, and some have been open for decades: B.Y.G in Shibuya dates from 1969, Grandfather's from 1971. Tokyo still has dozens of bars where Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones and the Beatles are the house soundtrack.
Each bar has its own angle. Some are built around one band: a Beatles live bar in Shimokitazawa, a Rolling Stones bar in Shibuya, a bar in Ikebukuro known for playing a lot of Led Zeppelin. Others focus on an era, such as 1970s and 80s American rock near Ikebukuro Station or 1970s and 80s British rock in Kabukicho. Shibuya, especially around Dogenzaka, is the center for record bars playing vinyl through serious sound systems. Ueno, Shimbashi, Akasaka and Ginza have relaxed bars suited to a drink after sightseeing or work, and Koenji and Kichijoji on the Chuo Line have laid-back bars playing 60s and 70s rock and blues.
Many of these bars describe themselves as cozy, grown-up hideaways, and talking about the music is half the appeal. Requests are welcome at many of them, and some, like Rock Bar Dome in Shimbashi and 20th Century Rock in Ueno, even let guests bring their own CDs or records. A few add live music: Rock Bar HEAVEN in Akasaka has a house band and impromptu jam sessions with the staff, and Crawdaddy Club in Kabukicho has a stage and instruments. Hard Rock Cafe inside Ueno Station is an easy first stop if you'd like a full meal with your rock.

The owner left a long company career in 2016 to open a long-dreamed-of rock bar, has been to Wacken Open Air, the world's biggest metal festival, six years in a row, and still fronts a band with high-pitched screams and a Flying V. The owner's taste leans melodic: Michael Schenker, UFO, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall and Avantasia are favorites. Rare music videos play on a 100-inch screen, and the bar hosts live shows and jam sessions. Drinks include beer, bourbon, whisky and shochu, with light bar snacks rather than full meals. Smoking is allowed inside on regular nights; on event nights, smokers step outside. Some English is understood, but a translation app on your phone is often the quickest way to chat.
When you request a song, naming the album as well as the band helps, and it's fine to let the staff choose what comes next. At bars that play records, leave the turntable and sleeves to the staff unless they invite you. Many of these are small counter bars, where a seating charge may be added to the bill, and cash is the safest way to pay.
Hours and holidays at small bars change, and some close for private events, so look at the bar's official website or social media before heading out. Smoking rules differ from bar to bar. The drinking age in Japan is 20. Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ueno are all easy to reach by train, and pairing a bar visit with a nearby record shop makes a fine evening.
