Tokyo has one of the densest clusters of metal bars anywhere. Japan has loved heavy metal since the 1980s, when bands such as LOUDNESS and X JAPAN rose at home and Western bands toured here constantly, and that devotion lives on in small bars where the music runs loud and the walls are covered in band memorabilia. Most are tiny counter bars rather than big venues, and at many of them the person behind the bar runs the music, often a DJ-style flow of albums and music videos from the 1980s to today.
The bars cluster in a few areas. Shinjuku has the most: Kabukicho is home to long-running metal bars that blast music videos, Golden Gai has a tiny bar devoted to metal and horror films, and Takadanobaba and Nishi-Shinjuku have their own. Roppongi has metal-themed bars and a heavy metal taproom pouring craft beer into band-logo glasses, handy if you're staying nearby. Ikebukuro has hard rock and heavy metal bars close to the station, and Koenji pairs metal with food, from a heavy metal dining bar to a vegan bar playing 1980s metal. In western Tokyo, Rockbar Painkiller near Kokubunji Station and a metal bar in Chofu with a hand-built interior are worth the train ride, and Koiwa and Hirai in the east have bars too.
Picking one comes down to mood. Some bars keep the volume at a level where you can still talk, others are loud video bars, and a handful are set up for playing, with guitars, amps and drums on hand for session nights. At Bauhaus in Roppongi, open since 1981, the staff play hard rock and metal hits live every night, taking requests from a house song list. Whichever you choose, wearing a shirt of your favorite band is the easiest conversation starter there is.

Rockbar Painkiller
Kokubunji, Tokyo
Near Kokubunji Station, Rockbar Painkiller is a hard rock and heavy metal bar named, of course, after the Judas Priest classic. The owner left a long company career in 2016 to open a long-dreamed-of rock bar, has been to Wacken Open Air, the world's biggest metal festival, six years in a row, and still fronts a band with high-pitched screams and a Flying V. The owner's taste leans melodic: Michael Schenker, UFO, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Sonata Arctica, Hammerfall and Avantasia are favorites. Rare music videos play on a 100-inch screen, and the bar hosts live shows and jam sessions. Drinks include beer, bourbon, whisky and shochu, with light bar snacks rather than full meals. Smoking is allowed inside on regular nights; on event nights, smokers step outside. Some English is understood, but a translation app on your phone is often the quickest way to chat.

Many metal bars seat only a handful of people, so if you come as a group, look in or ask at the door before piling in. Some bars add a cover or seating charge to the bill and others don't, so it's worth asking when you sit down. Bring cash, since not every small bar takes cards, and be aware that smoking is allowed inside at some places.
Requests are part of the culture at many metal bars, but each bar decides how they work: some take them freely, some follow the DJ's flow, and at session bars you should always ask before picking up an instrument. Event nights, after-show parties and irregular closures are common, so check the bar's official social media on the day. You must be 20 to drink in Japan, and carrying ID is a good idea.
