Shinjuku is Tokyo's biggest nightlife district, and for a visiting rock or metal fan it is the natural place to start. Around Shinjuku Station, one of the busiest in the world, you'll find the neon streets of Kabukicho, the tiny alleyway bars of Golden Gai and the quieter backstreets of Shinjuku-sanchome. The bars below are all in Shinjuku City, which also covers neighborhoods such as Nishi-Shinjuku, Okubo and Takadanobaba.
Heavy metal and hard rock make up the largest group, from long-running Kabukicho metal bars playing music videos at full volume to a Golden Gai hideaway devoted to metal and horror films. Alongside them are bars focused on classic Western rock and '70s and '80s British rock, a punk bar that spins records, a visual kei bar, and several places with amps, drums and a stage for live shows and jam sessions.
Each bar below comes with its own short description and tags such as metal, classic rock, punk or live, so you can choose by mood. Many are clustered around Kabukicho and Golden Gai, which makes it easy to visit more than one in a night. We add bars to this list as we confirm them.

Before you go
Most of these bars are small, often just a counter and a handful of seats, and many are run by one or two people. Many small bars in Japan charge a cover or seating fee, sometimes served with a small snack, while others charge none, so don't be surprised to see one on your bill. Cash is still common at small bars, so carry some yen even if you plan to pay by card. Smoking is allowed inside some bars, which is worth knowing if you're sensitive to it.
Opening days and hours at small bars change often, with irregular holidays and private events, so check the bar's official website or social media before you go. The legal drinking age in Japan is 20, and you may be asked for ID. If you arrive as a group, it's polite to ask before filling up a tiny bar. Song requests are welcome at many rock bars, but ask the staff first and follow the house style.
